By July 2, 2019 No Comments

Located 7 kilometres from Sydney’s Central Business District, Bondi is globally recognised as the epitome of Australian culture. But how did this Eastern Suburbs town become synonymous with Australia’s international identity? Read on to uncover why Bondi has become a standout suburb.

Culture

‘Bondi’ is Aboriginal for ‘water breaking over rocks.’ That’s why it comes as no surprise that a hallmark of its widespread appeal is the fact it is home to breathtaking beaches. But that’s not all that’s on offer! With a thriving nightlife, relaxed lifestyle and an endless supply of beachfront cafés, Bondi is a suburb teeming with residents and tourists alike! Take a trip to Bondi and you will be blown away by the eclectic group of individuals you encounter, from backpackers to laidback locals, and everything in between.

Want to live like the locals do? Then be sure to attend some of Bondi’s exciting events. Sculptures by the Sea, initiated in 1997, is the largest annual outdoor sculpture exhibition. Winter won’t stop Bondi either! Bondi Winter Magic transforms the beachside into a winter wonderland, complete with an ice rink and Ferris wheel. Of course, we can’t forget the Farmers Markets and City to Surf either! The list of opportunities is endless so be sure to check out the council’s event page for more suggestions.

Local Lifestyle

Whether you’re an avid surfer, fitness guru or a shopping addict, there is something on offer for everyone. Thanks to its proximity to the city, locals can enjoy spending weekends in the water, and weekdays working hard. It appears being laidback, yet glamorous, is the only prerequisite to be a Bondi native.

Primarily known for the famous Bondi Beach, it boasts the world’s oldest surf lifesaving club, Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club. Journey to the Southern end and you will find the popular swimming club, Bondi Icebergs. Although it’s no secret it has become better known for its incredible views and delicious food! Its main strip, Bondi Road, is where you can do most of your drinking, dining and shopping.

Looking for drinks with a seaside view? Don’t pass on checking out The Bucketlist, a local approved hotspot. Fine dining is available, but don’t worry, it’s got your burger cravings covered too.  If there’s not enough shopping here, venture out to Bondi Junction where all the biggest brands can be found at Westfield mall.
